Water & Bathing

Varberg is located right beside the fresh, salty sea, and it offers superb swimming from the beaches in the summer and invigorating health treatments at the spa facilities during the winter period.

Gorge on fresh fish and shellfish for dinner, enjoy long swims and walks, watch the sun set from a cliff and breath the salty sea breeze into your lungs. You can also choose to go to sea in a rib boat, on a windsurfing board or perhaps a bit more quietly with a sea kayak, fishing-boat or sailing-boat.

You’ll find several popular beaches along the 2.5 km long promenade that starts at the fortress. ”The children’s beach”, the famous naturists beach and little Apelviken, also known as ”Kåsa”. Apelviken, a long sandy beach that is famous for being one of Northern Europe’s best places for wind- and kite surfing, is located at the southern part of the promenade. There are more sandy beaches even further south, Södra Näs, Träslövsläge and Björkäng, for example.

North of the town centre the sandy beaches are increasingly interspersed with rocky outcrops. Five fantastic swimming coves are to be found on the Getterön peninsula, about 4 km north of the centre. If you continue north along the coast you’ll find more bathing places offering rocks and sand, for example in Kärradal, Espevik, Bua and Stråvalla.

Varberg’s old health resort tradition is still in evidence. The buildings that were erected and had their heyday during the turn of the century 1800-1900, are still engaged in the same activity and are just as popular. Varmbadhuset (hot baths), Kallbadhuset (cold baths) and Society Park, with its beautiful restaurant, are situated below the fortress. People stroll in the park just as before and listen to music, drink and eat well.

Over the years numerous large and small spa facilities have sprouted and they are keeping the health resort tradition going. Varbergs Stadshotell & Asia Spa are situated on the square in the town centre. Here you find a calm and harmonious spa section where the interior decor and treatment methods have an oriental flavour. The attractions here include a large massage pool with a view over the sea and Varberg Fortress.

Comwell Varbergs Kurort is located in the health resort area at Kåsa beach (abbreviation for Coast Sanatorium Apelviken) in Apelviken. The buildings and the premises were constructed in the early 1900s as a sanatorium for TB patients. Today it is one of Sweden’s most famous conference and spa facilities and the operation has won several fine distinctions and awards.

Close to the traditional old hot- and cold baths is Kurortsstaden, offering peace and quiet, bathing, massage and beauty treatments. Physiotherapy practices are also to be found in the building.

Leninbadet, a spectacular and colourful spa facility inspired by the Lenin Baths in St. Petersburg. Everything is in cobalt blue! A hotel that has expanded to include conference and spa facilities.
There is also a spa facility in Varberg’s beautiful interior. Ästad Gård has built its own spa in the heart of the countryside where you can enjoy different types of sauna and swimming in both hot and cold water.
